TG4 Leinster LGFA Championships Round Three
By Aisling Clery
Dublin will face Meath in the TG4 Leinster Senior Championship Final next Sunday and the sides met this afternoon in Parnell Park. With both sides already qualified for the Final, this afternoon was a dress rehearsal of sorts.
Dublin hit five goals in total with Nicole Owens (2), Carla Rowe, Jennifer Dunne and Caoimhe O’Connor hitting the net. Dublin fielded a strong fifteen with Sinéad Goldrick, Jennifer Dunne, Carla Rowe and Orlagh Nolan impressing in particular. Dublin built up a 4-8 to 0-5 interval lead with scores a premium in the second half.
Meath, on the other hand, chose a different tack, resting their experienced players and handing championship debuts to a number of players including their 2024 Minor Captain Kerrie Cole who chipped over a score for the Royals. Meadhbh Byrne and Ailbhe Leahy also showed well for Meath.
The jury will have to wait til next Sunday (Croke Park at 11.45am) as to which approach will prove successful!
On Saturday, Manguard Park was the venue as Kildare went head to head with Laois. While places in the Final were not up for grabs, finishing positions and placings in the All Ireland series was.
Holly Tyrrell found the net twice in the second half for Diane O’Hora’s team while Leah Doran converted a brilliant first half effort. Aoife Rattigan worked well for the Lilies, while Emily Lacey was the stand out player for Laois. She hit 0-3 over the hour for Laois and was involved in a huge number of other attacks.
In the Intermediate Championship, Wexford defeated Westmeath in Starlights GAA. Grace Donovan and Wexford Minor Captain Béibhinn McDonald got the goals for Wexford while Chloe Fox hit 0-4 as Lizzy Kent’s team won all three of their round robin games. They will face Westmeath again in the decider as while Westmeath and Offaly finished level on points, Westmeath registered more points over the bar in their head to head with Offaly in the opening round. Karen Hegarty hit the net for Westmeath while Sarah Dillon and Caoimhe Kilmurray hit 0-4 between them.
In Glenisk O’Connor Park, Offaly were 4-9 to 1-6 winners over Wicklow and will finish third in the group as both sides now turn their focus to the All Ireland series in a few weeks. Róisín Cockram, Emma Hand, Róisín Ennis and Ciara Walsh all found the net for the Faithful while Sinéad McGettigan got Wicklow’s only goal of the contest.
In the Junior Championship, Louth and Carlow will compete in the TG4 Junior Final on May 19th after both sides won their Round Three contests this weekend.
On Friday night, Louth were 2-13 to 1-8 winners over Longford. Aoife Russell and Kate Flood found the goals for Louth, while Niamh Brady hit Longford’s only goal of the game.
Carlow were 4-17 to 0-2 winners over Kilkenny in this afternoon’s fixture played in Fenagh. Sara Doyle hit 2-2 for Ed Burke’s team while Maeve O’Neill also hit a brace of goals. Cliodhna Ní Shé hit 0-6 over the hour.
