TG4 Leinster LGFA Championships Round Two
By Aisling Clery
Dublin and Meath will contest the 2024 TG4 Leinster LGFA Senior Final in Croke Park on May 12th after their respective victories today over Laois and Kildare.
Dublin were 5-19 to 0-1 winners over Laois at Laois Hire O’Moore Park. Annabelle Timothy hit 3-3 for Mick Bohan’s troops while Chloe Darby (penalty) and Niamh Hetherton also raised green flags for Dublin. It was a clinical and ruthless performance by the reigning champions who led 1-11 to 0-0 at half time.
In Navan, Meath defeated the Lilywhites at Páirc Tailteann. Emma Duggan struck 1-3 while Niamh Gallogly hit 1-1 in a game where Meath led comfortably at the break 2-7 to 0-5. Kildare fought back bravely in the second half with substitutes making an impact off the bench. Two Neasa Dooley scores in quick succession made it a three point contest but they couldn’t find a killer blow and Meath sealed with win with a flurry of scores.
In the Intermediate Championship, Wexford recorded their second win in this year’s Championship and booked a place in the Intermediate Final as they saw off the challenge of Offaly. Wexford took a 0-7 to 0-1 lead into the half time break before adding to the scoreboard in the second half and sealing the win. Aoife Cullen finished top of the scoring charts for Lizzy Kent’s team hitting 0-5 over the hour (three frees) while Róisín Murphy netted the only goal of the game.
Westmeath overpowered Wicklow at An Tochar to seal their first win in this year’s Championship. Sarah Dillon top scored for the visiting team as she converted 1-6 over the hour. Anna Jones hit 2-2 while there were also goals for Ashley Ruane and Karen Hegarty. Westmeath travel to Wexford next weekend while Wicklow will travel to face Offaly.
In the Junior Championship, Longford and Carlow played out a terrific battle in Glennon Brothers Pearse Park. Carlow led 3-2 to 1-6 at the break but a tremendous second half saw Longford just edge it, the game finishing 3-9 to 4-3. It was a second win for Pat Tiernan’s charges although results will go all the way to round three before finalists can be confirmed! Grace Shannon hit 2-7 for Tiernan’s side who face Louth in the final round next weekend.
In Kilkenny, Louth got their first win of this year’s Championship against the home side. Louth were 1-9 to 0-0 up at the break and they consolidated that lead in the second half. Kate Flood hit 1-6 while Mia Duffy and Ciara Woods both converted 1-2. Kilkenny’s goal was scored by Jennifer O’Keeffe.
