Round Up: Leinster U14 & U16 Round One Results
March 03, 2019
It was a busy weekend across the province with the 4th Round of the Lidl NFL happening alongside the opening round of the U14 and U16 Leinster Championships.
In the U14 championships, somewhat unusually all four away teams came away with the spoils. Meath defeated neighbours Westmeath; the first of three wins for the Royal County this weekend. There was a goalfest in Enniscorthy as Kildare got the better of Wexford on a 6-09 to 4-04 scoreline. Full credit to the home side, Wexford were unrelenting and that spirit will serve them well this season. In Group C, Offaly defeated Kilkenny while in Group D Louth overcame a stiff Carlow challenge to take all three points back to the Wee County.
Somewhat freakish weather on Sunday afternoon meant fixture chaos with several National League games falling victim to the sudden onslaught of sleet and snow. Full credit to the counties for lining out on what was a dismal day for football. In Group A, a late change to the venue meant Meath and Kildare played out in Dunganny. Meath led by 2-07 to 1-01 at the break before going on to record a 4-09 to 2-04 win against last year’s Leinster A Champions.
In Blanchardstown, Dublin and Longford played out an absolute humdinger of a clash. With Longford having defeated Dublin in last year’s u14 competition, this game was always going to be a good one and it didn’t disappoint. Dublin led Longford by 2-03 to 1-01 at the break but the second half was a goal fest with the ladies from the Capital eventually coming out on top by three points – 6-06 to 5-06. Full credit to both teams on a terrific display in woeful weather conditions!
Unfortunately, both Group B games fell foul of the weather with the Laois/Westmeath game being called off at half time due to worsening conditions. In Group C, Louth defeated Wicklow by 3-12 to 0-08 on Saturday afternoon while Kilkenny enjoyed a 7-08 to 2-07 win over Carlow.
Well done to all teams this weekend and we look forward to the next rounds of competition!
